Issue/Question

How does it look when a recipient gets an encrypted e-mail?

Environment

  • Microsoft Information Protection
  • Outlook
  • Outlook 365 (web version)

Resolution

How an external recipient views an encrypted e-mail

  • External users will receive the following e-mail. To read the encrypted message, they will click Read the message.

  • Most external users will want to select the Sign in with a One-time passcode.

  • External users will be redirected to the following page. A separate e-mail will be sent with a one-time passcode to the listed e-mail address. Keep this page open and navigate to the new e-mail.

  • Open the separate e-mail containing the passcode. Copy this passcode.

  • Go back to the encrypted e-mail page to enter the passcode. Click Continue.

  • External users will then be able to read the contents of the encrypted e-mail. A banner will be displayed letting external users know that the message is encrypted.
