Reporting a Suspicious/Unwanted Email

Issue/Question

How do I submit an email message as phishing or junk from my Macomb account?

Environment

  • Outlook (Classic)
  • New Outlook
  • Outlook for the web

Note: It is possible to report an email in Outlook on a mobile device, but this is not covered in this article as the process may be slightly different depending on the Outlook version and device used. For a general overview of what to expect, consult this Microsoft Support article.

Resolution

Method 1: Using the Report Button on the Ribbon

  • Select the email you want to report from the message pane by clicking on it.
  • From the "Home" tab, the Report button is on the left-hand side of the ribbon and appears as a red shield with an exclamation mark inside:A screenshot showing the location of the Report button on the ribbon in Outlook.
  • To mark your message as phishing, you can:
  1. Click directly on the red "shield" symbol, anywhere within the top half of the button. OR
  2. Click on the word "Report" or the nearby arrow to enter a dropdown menu, where you can then select Report Phishing

  • To submit the message as junk, click on the word "Report" or the nearby arrow to enter the dropdown menu, and then click Report Junk.
  • The reported email will be sent to the Information Security department for further review.

Note: Reporting a message as Junk will move the email to your "Junk Email" folder, while reporting it as Phishing will DELETE the email and move it to the "Deleted Items" folder.

Method 2: Reporting from the Shortcut Menu

  • You can access a shortcut menu to report an email message by right-clicking on the message itself in the message pane. A list of options will appear.
  • Hover your mouse over the option that says Report, and the Report junk and Report phishing options will appear in a sidebar.
    • These options have the same functions as they do on the ribbon button.

Note: The options may appear slightly differently depending on the version of Outlook being used.

Removing a Message from your Junk Email Folder

If a legitimate email accidentally gets sent to your "Junk Email" folder, you can move it back to your inbox using the Report button/option.

  • While in your "Junk Email" folder, click on the message you wish to mark as Not junk.
    • You can select multiple messages at the same time by holding down "CTRL" or using the "Select" tool in Outlook.
  • Using either of the two methods explained above, navigate to the Report menu as if you were marking the message as Junk. You will see that the "Report junk" option has been replaced with a different option, Not junk.
  • Click on the Not junk button. The emails you selected will be moved back to your inbox and out of your "Junk Email" folder.
