Resolution

When trying to log into a system that requires MFA you will get the following prompts.

  • After attempting to log in, you will receive a message that says More information required. Select Next.

  • You will be prompted to set up 2 verification methods. By default, you will be prompted to first enroll using the Microsoft Authenticator App and second enroll using a phone number for voice or sms verification.
    • Alternatively, you may click I want to set up a different method if Authenticator is not your preference. This guide does not cover choosing an alternative.
  • Download the Microsoft Authenticator application.
  • Select Next.

  • On the next screen, it tells you to review the notifications options and add the account.
  • In the Microsoft Authenticator Application, select add an account and select Work or School.
  • Select Next on the screen.

  • Scan the QR Code using your phone or tablet’s camera
  • Select Next.

  • You’ll be prompted to Try it out and will receive an app (push) notification via the app that says Approve Sign in?
  • Click Approve to confirm the Sign-in.
  • You have successfully added the Microsoft Authenticator MFA option to your account.  Click Next to continue.

  • You’ll be next prompted to enroll a phone number.
    • Alternatively, you may click I want to set up a different method if a voice or text message option is not your preference. This guide does not cover choosing an alternative.
  •  Enter your phone number and choose Text me a code or Call me. The default is Text me a code.
    • If you select text message you will be prompted to enter a code.
    • If you select Call me it will call you and follow the prompts to verify the phone number.

  • Your phone will receive either a phone call or a text message, depending on your selection above.
  • If you select Call Me, you’ll receive a phone call.
    • Simply answer and press the # key.
  • If you select Text me a code, your phone will receive a text message containing a 6-digit code.
    • Enter the code and click Next.

  • Once complete, you will see SMS Verified. Click Next.

  • You have successfully registered two authentication methods to be used with Multifactor Authentication (MFA).

Note: You are encouraged to register additional methods, if possible, in case this one isn’t available when you need it or for when it’s time to reset your password. Please go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info to set up other methods and your Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR). Please see the related knowledge base articles on how to set up other methods and SSPR: MFA and SSPR set up.
