Issue/Question
Common features that require the use of Adobe Acrobat Reader
Environment
Resolution
Viewing
Acrobat Reader allows you to open PDF files. It can open PDFs in-browser using a plugin, or in-app.
Reader allows searching within PDFs. You can use search to go through body text, layers, form fields, digital signatures, comments, bookmarks, and attachments.
Interaction
Reader allows for a few notation features. You can add comments on any part of the document or attach them to text and multimedia attachments. You can markup a PDF with the highlighter tool to highlight text and use a draw tool to do things such as circling text, an image, etc.
The standard free version of Reader does NOT support altering PDF content itself, whether through the text editor, search and replace, etc.
Signing/Filling Forms
Reader allows you to digitally sign PDFs and fill out forms.
Reader allows you to send PDFs for signature, however, at a limit of two documents every 30 days.
Reader does not allow you to encrypt forms but does allow for creating a password on the file.
Printing
Reader allows you to print PDFs.
You can specify common print options such as printing on both sides, color/black and white, sizing and orientation, multiple pages, booklets, and portions of the page.
Converting/Creating Files
Adobe Reader does not allow for PDF file creation/conversion within the application, however, desktop applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint can be saved as PDF files within their own respective applications. PDF files can also be opened within Office applications and converted to their respective application file formats, e.g. PDF to Word file.
