How do I register the Microsoft Authenticator mobile app verification code multi-factor authentication (MFA) method?

 Note: These instructions apply to most users, though your experience may vary slightly. If you need assistance with MFA or SSPR registration, please reach out to the Service Desk.

  • Enter your password, then click Sign in.
  • If you are prompted to stay signed in, click No.

  • On the Security Info page, click Add method.

  • Ensure the Authenticator app method is selected, then click Add.

 

  • Follow the prompt to install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device.  If your phone asks you, allow notifications as well as access to the camera.

  • Search for and install the Microsoft Authenticator app from your mobile device's app store.
  • After installing the app, click Next on your laptop or desktop. 

 

  • Follow the prompt as directed. 

  • Open the Microsoft Authenticator app and tap the + in the upper right corner, or select Add account.

  • Select Work or school account. 

  • The app will automatically open your camera for the next step. 
  • Click Next on your laptop or desktop. 

  • Scan the QR code displayed on your laptop or desktop using the app. Position the box in the app to align with the QR code on your screen, as if taking a photo. The app will automatically advance to the next screen, as shown in the following step 

 

  • Your Macomb Community College account will now be displayed in the app. 
  • Click Next on your laptop or desktop. 

  • test notification will be sent to your mobile device. 
  • Click Approve when prompted. 
  • Click Next when complete. 

You will be redirected back to the Security Info page, where a pop-up in the upper right corner will confirm that your device was successfully added. You should also see Microsoft Authenticator listed, as shown in the screenshot below.

If you have previously added any other MFA or SSPR methods, they will be displayed here as well.

  • To set the default sign-in method to a code instead of a notification, click Change next to the current default sign-in method.

 

  • From the drop-down menu, select Authenticator app or hardware token – code.
  • Click Confirm. 

  • You will be returned to the Security Info page, where a pop-up in the upper right corner will confirm that you have successfully changed your default sign-in method.
